Day two of my recent trip to Nashville saw us in a bind for what to eat for lunch. Why not try a fourth brewpub?
Blackstone Restaurant and Brewery is one of the few brewpubs in town that also has a kitchen popping out meals. I’ve heard of Blackstones before in other parts of the country, so I’m not sure if it’s a large chain or not. Given the level of décor, brewing expertise and food tastes, however, I would be willing to bet that it is.
I’d call Blackstone the Applebee’s of brewpubs, and that’s not a big compliment. The beer is safe. They have the requisite beers that have different colors and slightly different flavors. But there’s nothing there would scare even the hardiest Bud drinker away. The beers are like different shades of gray – pale comparisons to what their titular namesakes are capable of tasting like.
The food is basically the same. While my wife had a pretty decent steak and blue cheese salad – a monstrous one at that – I had an entirely forgettable buffalo burger. Nothing seemed fresh on the entire sandwich, and there wasn’t much flavor to speak of. And the meat to bread ratio was way off because of the giant bun. The side of sweet potato waffle fries was pretty decent, but again probably something that came in frozen from a Food Systems of America or Sysco truck.
I always think the main judgment of a dish is whether or not you’d order it again. Sometimes there’s a dish where it’s all you crave. Others it’s quite good, but you’d rather explore the menu more. And then there’s the category of never wanting to order it again.
