My oh my how Traverse City has changed since the last time I was in town five years ago. It used to be that the tiny tourist town had three pretty okay breweries in town. That number has now at least doubled. And leave it to Michigan to be able to explode the brewery market in a small town without any of them apparently sacrificing quality.

The first full day of a week-long stay on Lake Leelanau – a trip I hope to make at least every other year from here on out – brought a few bumps in the road that ended with us being near downtown in the afternoon. Why not check out a brewery?

I loved the vibes that The Workshop was giving off. There’s a mural of old Nintendo characters on the brick wall across the street. There’s a bookcase full of board games from my youth and today. There’s just something about the spot.workshop3

Maybe it’s the beer. The day we checked in, they had about a dozen on tap, which we happily poured into two flights and went to play some Candyland. I have to say that everything was very well done. The carbonation levels were perfect, as was the mouth feel on each beer. None felt thin, none felt syrupy – they were all right in that sweet spot of drinkability.

workshop2I would have happily consumed everything that came out of their taps. Even the honey blondes were malty and full of flavor. It was a great balance in the lineup: not heavy on the IPA, not heavy on the lagers, and a few barrel aged high ABV options to round it out.

The smells coming out of the kitchen were amazing, and the pizza looked the same on its way to somebody else’s table. Next time, I’ll have to fill the belly with some food as well as some beer.
