Well, it finally happened. Trophy Brewing got too big for it’s small pizzeria in downtown Raleigh, so they opened a larger production facility (and taproom) closer to the outerbelt where, I would assume, the rent on large spaces is much more reasonable.
Like their downtown location, however, the taproom here isn’t all that large. A triangular room with a bar running down one side and long tables extending out from the other, the impeccably new, clean and well-designed taproom gives you quite a view of the production floor. They don’t serve food, but I would be willing to bet the places is never open without a food truck from Raleigh’s overabundance of four-wheeler restaurants.
I enjoyed the vibe of the new place. Located on an industrial road, the parking lots on either side are gravelly and dusty. There’s not a lot of pretension to be found anywhere in the area, including in the taproom.
The beer was…okay. But that’s how I’ve always felt about Trophy’s wares. Sometimes they knock an experimental beer out of the park, but more often then not, their beer rates somewhere between a 7 and an 8 out of 10.
