A very small chain, Three Notch’d also has locations in Harrisonburg and Richmond. I can’t speak for those two, but the one in Charlottesville is fairly…meh.

To clarify, “meh” isn’t bad – it’s just kind of a I can take it or leave it kind of feeling. It didn’t leave me wanting more or chomping at the bit to get back. Maybe that’s because I’d already drunk more than my share the night before and was coming to this spot after drinking even more at Random Row down the street.

3n1But to be fair, I had a blast at Hardywood right after, so I’m not going to pull any punches.

Three Notch’d is a fairly standard spot – the brick exterior is pretty and the front porch is nice to relax on. The interior is a fairly standard long and narrow room with longish high tops running down one side. It’s nice, just not memorable.

The beers are the same. My wife and I went through two flights, mostly thinking, “Yep, that’s fine.” The flagship IPA, red and English brown were all excellent examples of their style. My favorite was probably the latter. But neither of us really went “wow” until I grabbed a goblet of their seasonal New England IPA.

3n2Despite the fact that I hate that this is now a thing – why can’t it just be an IPA? – this was a standout beer. All the right flavor profiles and all the right alcohol levels. I guess I kind of understand why it’s a thing…
